On June 7, 1999, TRC Garrow Associates carried out an archaeological survey in Columbus, Georgia, on a tract to be affected by a road construction project at the intersection of Wynnton Road, Peacock Avenue, and Brown Avenue. The roadwork will involve realigning Brown Avenue to meet Peacock Avenue, and slightly widening the roads within a defined area. The work is for Georgia Department of Transportation Project Number STP-8023(2). The survey was performed for W.K. Dickson. The survey resulted in the identification of two historic-period archaeological sites dating minimally to the early twentieth century. The site boundaries extend beyond the project area, but it is very unlikely that intact deposits associated with these sites exist within the project area. Typically, such deposits are not present along the edges of existing roads, but are found near standing and former structures-particularly in backyards where privies, cisterns, and other features might be found. Because the sites were not surveyed in their entirety, it is not possible at this time to offer an assessment of their potential eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. However, the portions of these sites that lie in the proposed right-of-way will not be adversely affected by the proposed undertaking.
