Abstract

In January of 2000 a 1.5 km (0.9 mi) stretch of Bellwood Road in Calhoun, Georgia was surveyed for archeological sites. Gordon County plans to improve this site of the road by symmetrically widening the southern half, and rerouting the northern half on new location. One prehistoric and two historic archeological sites were recorded by the survey. The prehistoric site, 9GO23, was first recorded in 1958. Current investigations indicate that the portion of the site within the proposed right-of-way has poor integrity and low research potential. The remainder is in a plowed field and therefore appears to have poor integrity. Thus, the site is recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Concerning the historic sites, 9GO189 consists of a twentieth century farm complex that still has standing structures, and 9GO190 is the remnant of a twentieth century barn. Neither site is considered eligible to the NRHP. In sum, we recommend that the road improvements will have no adverse effect to any significant archeological sites.
