Abstract

This report describes an intensive Phase I archaeological survey of a 2,212-acre (895.5-ha.) portion of Fort Benning Military Reservation, in Compartments D-4, D-5, D-6, D-14, D-15, F-2, and J-7, Chattahoochee County, Georgia. The compartments are located within the east central portion of the military base. In previous work the focus area was called the Mechanized Infantry Training Area (MITA). Because its constant use as a training area, many of the landforms in this study were severely impacted. Areas which are not currently being impacted by military use are reforested. As a result, most of the sites recorded were relatively small and very few diagnostic materials were collected. Ninety-eight cultural resource loci were identified and delineated during the current study, including 37 newly recorded archaeological sites, 2 previously recorded sites, and 59 isolated finds. Twelve sites were recommended as potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These sites include; 9CE49, 9CE1656, 9CE1670, 9CE1681, 9CE1698, 9CE1700, 9CE1706, 9CE1708, 9CE1714, 9CE1717, 9CE1726, and 9CE1682. The remaining 27 sites and all of the 59 isolated finds were recommended as not eligible for NRHP listing, and no further archaeological considerations are suggested.
