Abstract

From October 12-October 18, 1978, an archaeological survey was conducted on the final segment of the John C. Calhoun Expressway [Ga. DOT Project M-7004 (1)]. This segment will run from the present terminus at 15th Street to a point just west of 12th Street, crossing the Augusta Canal, Hawk's Gully, 13th Street, and the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. After crossing the Augusta Canal to the west, the proposed alignment will pass between the Enterprise Manufacturing Company to the north and the Graniteville warehouse to the south. The alignment will then pass between the Salvation Army and the Dixie Coal Company to the north and Consolidated Fibres to the south, before crossing the Atlantic Coastline Railroad and Hawk's Gully. Beyond Hawk's Gully, the proposed alignment will require the removal of several existing houses and businesses on the southwest and southeast corners of Greene and 13th Streets. The total length of the project will be approximately 3,400 feet and a right-of-way of 100-200 feet will be required, depending upon whether bridge spans, fill, or retaining walls are used. All construction will take place on or above the existing grade (Figure 1, Appendix A).
