Abstract

In November of 2000, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) conducted an intensive cultural resource assessment survey of a 300 square meter area that is the proposed location of the St. Simons Island Well at Proctor and Mallory Streets on St. Simons Island in Glynn County, Georgia. The goals of the investigation were to locate all cultural resources within the project area, and to assess their significance and potential eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NR). Subsurface testing was carried out at 10-meter intervals throughout the tract and supplemented by an examination of the visible ground surface wherever possible. All shovel tests (n=7) were approximately 30 cm in diameter and dug to one meter below surface. As a result of testing, no sites or isolated artifacts were discovered. It is recommended that the proposed project be allowed to proceed without any further concern for impact to significant cultural resources.
