Abstract

The archeological survey of the proposed realignment of Rocky Creek Road (C.R. 158) and new bridge over the Little Towaliga River found no archeological sites within the proposed new right-of-way. However, approximately 40 m (125 ft) east of the project, presumably outside of the area of potential effect, the survey recorded remnants of a timber frame dam, a mill raceway, and structural features that were associated with a late nineteenth to early twentieth century cotton gin. Archival research established that there was also a grist(?) mill on the south bank of the river, opposite the cotton gin. This small industrial complex is designated as 9M0528, and is recommended as potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
