Abstract

From March 18, 1999 to September 10, 1999 and from November 16, 1999 to November 24, 1999, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 9,860 acres (3,990 ha) on Fort Stewart Military Reservation. This survey was conducted within Evans, Liberty, and Long counties, Georgia. The survey area encompassed National Resource Management Units (NRMUs) E9.3, E21.3, F2.1, F3.1, F4.1, F6.6, F6.7, F7.1, F9.2, F9.3, F9.4, F9.5, F 16.2, F 16.3, and F 17.1 and Camp Oliver. The work was sponsored by Fort Stewart and was performed under the terms of a contract between PCI and the National Park Service. A total of 292 cultural resource loci were encountered and investigated during this survey (Table A-1). Among this total were 12 previously recorded archaeological sites, 108 newly recorded sites, and 172 isolated finds. Of the 292 loci investigated, 10 sites (9LG234, 9LI279, 9LI452, 9LI741, 9LI763, 9LI774, 9LI778, 9LI785, 9LI786, and 9LI868) are recommended as indeterminate concerning National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility and should be avoided or investigated further. Additionally, five isolated finds (9LG233, 9LG236, 9LG237, 9LI829, and 9LI830) are recommended as indeterminate and likewise should be avoided until they can be completely delineated. The remaining cultural resources were considered ineligible for NRHP inclusion. Among the ineligible sites, though, are two cemeteries (9EV 140 and 9LI847) and one possible single grave site (9LI782) that are protected by Fort Stewart and should continue to be avoided. The rest of the ineligible resources do not warrant further investigation and should be considered cleared for future land-use activities. The current study includes background contextual information as well as data analyses. The background contextual information includes a detailed discussion of documented historic communities on Fort Stewart. The data analyses include a study of site locations in respect to various environmental variables. Various distributional studies are undertaken herein including analysis of sites and artifact data on the intrasite and intersite levels. Also OCR assays were generated from soil samples collected during the fieldwork, and a discussion of these is included.
