Abstract

SSI conducted a cultural resource survey of the proposed Water and Sewer System Expansion and Related Areas for Walker County, Georgia. The project areas were located in or near the city of Chickamauga and consisted of approximately 14,000 feet (4250 meters) of water and sewer line corridor and two tracts of land, totaling approximately 70 acres (28 hectares). Only one archaeological site, ES-1282-1, was recorded within the project impact areas. The site is a small heavily disturbed lithic scatter. located within the proposed 55 acre (22 hectare) industrial park. No further work is recommended for Site ES-1282-1. One portion of the project area, a 24" water line crossing of Crawfish Spring, is considered to be archaeologically sensitive because of the presence of the remnants of a nineteenth century mill dam located within 75 feet (23 meters) of the corridor. Caution is urged in this area. Cultural resource clearance is recommended.
