Abstract

On November 8, 2000, Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey for the proposed replacement of two bridges on S.R. 22 and one on S.R. 77 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The work was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation, through the engineering firm of Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc. All three bridges will be replaced in their present location, with a detour and temporary bridge constructed adjacent and parallel to the existing structure. The area of potential effect for each project was the maximum extent of construction as shown on project maps, which usually equated to the extent of filling for the detour. The project areas were about 365 m long by as much as 35 m wide. Narrow portions of the side opposite the proposed detour were also included in the area of potential effect. Survey consisted of visual inspection and the excavation of shovel tests. The survey located two archeological sites, a small, highly disturbed prehistoric lithic scatter at SR 22 over Long Creek and a highly disturbed historic period artifact scatter at SR 22 over Big Clouds Creek. Both sites have little integrity and research potential. We recommend that both are not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places because they fail to meet the minimum requirements set forth under criterion "d. " Therefore, we recommend that the proposed projects will have no adverse effect to archeological resources, and that no further work is warranted.
