Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey of the approximately 40 acres of the Gwinnett County Civic Center Expansion was surveyed by New South Associates on December 5, and 6, 2000. A two person crew walked transects along the major landforms throughout the study tract, excavating shovel test pits along the transects. While no artifacts were recovered during shovel tests, three sites were found based on surface features. Site 9Gw501 is an abandoned earthen dam with erosional damage. Site 9Gw502 is a historic house site whose features include a house, four frame and one cinderblock outbuilding, and extensive surface dumping. Site 9Gw503 is also a house site. The main house is burned but has a standing fieldstone chimney and is accompanied by a well, a barn and a modern garage. None of the sites appear to meet the minimum requirements for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and no further archaeological study is recommended.
