Abstract

In March 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Bouldercrest Bridge Replacement in DeKalb County, Georgia. The project corridor is approximately 0.85 km (0.53 mi) long and up to 45 meters (148 ft) wide. The width of the corridor expands to its widest at the location of the proposed bridge replacement. The corridor decreases in width as it moves away from the proposed bridge replacement. The project corridor begins just south of Interstate 285, extends south over South River, and ends just south of the intersection of Bouldercrest Road and River Road. This survey was conducted for LPA Group by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61 (Appendix A) in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and 36 CFR Part 800. These investigations followed procedures defined in the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Plan Development Process and comply with the requirements of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division. Project activities included historical background research, archaeological field survey, and evaluation of all archaeological resources within the project corridor. Historic resources located in or near the project corridor are addressed in a separate report (Beaty 2001). Background research identified no previously recorded archaeological sites within the project corridor. Six (6) sites were located within a 0.8 km (0.5 mi) radius of the project corridor. Of the six sites; four (9DA19, 9DA20, 9DA94, and 9DA95) are Late Archaic, one (9DA62) is general Archaic, and one (9DA80) is unknown. Three of the sites (9DA 19, 9DA20, and 9DA80) are documented as quarry sites. Sites 9DA94 and 9DA95 are considered artifact and shell scatters. Site 9DA62 is recorded as a camp site. All six sites were documented by Georgia State University. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility of these sites is unknown. The archaeological field survey of the project tract identified no unrecorded archaeological sites. Based on results of these investigations, the proposed Bouldercrest Bridge Replacement will not affect significant archaeological resources. No additional archaeological investigations are recommended.
