Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two alternates for improvements to the Panola Road and Rock Springs Road intersection in DeKalb County, Georgia. The survey did not locate any archaeological sites along either of the alternates. As well as conducting regular survey along the proposed alternates, the boundaries of the cemetery of the Macedonia Baptist Church were to be defined through close interval probing. However, this goal was not accomplished. The edges of the cemetery have had soil push piled around them, making probing impossible. The survey recommends no further regular archaeological study of either alternate. However, should the alternate nearest the cemetery be selected, then it is recommended that the smallest equipment possible be used to clear the site and that an archaeologist monitor the clearing. Once the site is cleared, the archaeologists should be able to determine if any grave shafts extend into the project area.
