Abstract

Archaeologists with the LAMAR Institute recently conducted a reconnaissance level survey of three proposed development tracts in Effingham County, Georgia. This work was performed under contract for Bron Cleveland Associates as part of a preliminary study for the construction of the proposed Ebenezer Creek Greenway. The greenway is funded, in part, by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Fieldwork was successfully completed on March 16, 1999. A complete reconnaissance of the three study tracts (approximately 200 acres) was accomplished resulting in the location of seven previously undocumented archaeological sites. This study was equivalent to an intensive survey of the study areas and all potentially significant terrestrial sites were located and identified by surface examination and subsurface shovel testing. Three archaeological sites (9Ef242, 9Ef243, and 9Ef244) were deemed to be potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and additional archaeological survey and testing are recommended for these sites. The other four sites (9M40, 9Ef241, and Field Sites EG2 and EG5) lack substantive archaeological or historical research potential and are considered ineligible for listing in the NRHP. Results of our findings in each study tract are presented in the following report. Artifacts collected by the reconnaissance survey are inventoried in Appendix 1 and copies of the Georgia archaeological site forms are included in Appendix 2.
