Abstract

At the request of Libby Bell, the site manager at Etowah Indian Mounds, the Archaeology Unit surveyed three areas proposed for swing set construction on September 5, 2001. Two of the areas were on the banks of the Etowah river, just southeast of mound B and C, and the other area was approximately 40 meters from the museum's western exit, at the edge of the prehistoric borrow pit. The two areas at the riverbank were marked with stakes, and Libby showed us the area under consideration near the borrow pit.

Shovel tests were conducted at each of the areas. All the soil was screened through a 1/4 inch mesh screen. All shovel tests were taken down to sterile sub-soil. No evidence of cultural material was found at any of the proposed areas. The area adjacent to the bank of the Etowah River was reported by Lewis Larson in the 1970's to have been "scoured" by the flooding actions of the river. Our shovel tests were consistent with this assessment. Only redeposited material was found in this area.
