Abstract

In May, 2001 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of proposed improvements to the intersection of Dawson Forest Road and Lumpkin Campground Road in southern Dawson County. The improvements consist mainly of adding turning lanes at each approach to the intersection and a pair of traffic islands. The project involves a slight widening of the roads for distances of up to 220 m, but as little as 73 m in one direction. Archival research showed that Dawson Forest Road, and thus the subject intersection, was not built until the 1960s. No archeological sites or house sites were documented for the project area, but one house site is situated nearby. The survey detected no archeological materials or sites in the project area. Most of the project area is consumed by existing graded shoulders and cut banks. Because no archaeological sites exist in the area of potential effect, we recommend that the proposed project be granted clearance to proceed as designed.
