Abstract

DNR recently acquired through purchase or easement contiguous parcels of land (Figure 1) sufficient to construct a foot trail between Cloudland Canyon State Park in Dade County and Lula Lake, in Walker County. The trail will run along Lookout Mountain for a length of about 14 miles. Long-term plans include construction of a parallel trail on a section of abandoned railbed, forming a loop trail between the park and lake.

Parks and Historic Sites Division of Georgia DNR contacted the Archaeological Services Unit of the Historic Preservation Division of GDNR to schedule an archaeological survey of the first segment of the proposed trail corridor. This segment is funded through a recreational trails component of Federal Highways Administration's TEA-21 program. The recreational trails program is administered in Georgia by DNR Pre-construction archaeological surveys are required by state and federal regulations. The purpose of this archaeological survey is to identify archaeological sites within the project corridor, determine their extent, and evaluate their significance in terms of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Results of the survey can then be used by State Park planners and staff to protect and manage significant sites.
