Abstract

An intensive archaeological resources survey was carried out for the proposed Arlington to Crestview Transmission Line and Substation in Early and Baker counties, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The survey encompassed a 13.54 km (8.43 mi) long and 22.86 meters (75 ft) wide corridor. The substation area is 2 hectares (5 acres). The project corridor begins just south of Arlington and east of State Route 45, and extends east and south crossing State Route 216 at it's intersection with Cherry Road, Evans Smith Road, Nicholasville Road, and Ike Newberry Road. The corridor terminates at it's intersection with Georgia Highway 200 (GA 200). The proposed substation is located in northeast corner of the intersect of the proposed corridor and GA 200. This survey was conducted for Georgia Transmission Corporation. Five (5) archaeological sites (9BX86, 9ER196, 9ER197, 9ER198, and 9ER199) and six (6) isolated finds (C-1, C-3, C-4, C-5, E-1, and E-4) were identified during fieldwork. Four (4) of the sites (9BX86, 9ER196, 9ER197, and 9ER198) are lithic scatters, while site 9ER199 is an historic scatter. All of the sites and isolated finds are considered ineligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The proposed project will not affect significant archaeological resources. No additional archaeological resources investigations are recommended.
