Abstract

On 13 and 14 March 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted a cultural resources survey on a 56 hectare (138 acre) tract for a proposed combined cycle turbine to be located near the Double Creek region of Lake Oconee in Greene County, Georgia. This survey was conducted in accordance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (16 USC 470, as amended) and regulations implementing this law (36 CFR Part 800). Cultural resources investigations consisted of background research and field survey. Background research was conducted at the State Archaeological Site Files in Athens, and at the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in Atlanta. No previously recorded archaeological sites were identified within 0.8 km (0.5 mi) of the proposed project area. Likewise, no previously recorded architectural resources were identified in or near the project area. Field survey identified three archaeological sites (9GE 1872-9GE 1874) and two isolated finds of cultural material. Two of these sites (9GE 1873 and 9GE 1874) are late nineteenth/early twentieth century house sites, while the other (9GE1872) is a small prehistoric ceramic scatter (mainly surface). All of these sites are recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the area is recommended for cultural resources clearance.
