Abstract

During the period of July 7 through July 23, 1999, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted evaluative testing at Site 9FU331 in Fulton County, Georgia. The site is located along the western end of the proposed sewer line, north of the confluence of Camp Creek and the Chattahoochee River. Close-grid shovel testing and three 1 by 2-meter test units were excavated during the evaluative testing. Partially intact, ceramic-bearing deposits over an intact preceramic zone were confirmed at the site. Diagnostic artifacts recovered indicate occupation during the Early Woodland, Middle to Late Woodland and Late Mississippian through Creek periods. Based upon the findings, Site 9FU331 is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. Due to project constraints, avoidance of the site is not feasible. Therefore, data recovery of a percentage of the site within the corridor will be required to mitigate the adverse effects of the project undertaking.
