Abstract

This report presents the results of a Phase I archaeological survey of 4,219 acres at Lake Thurmond on the Georgia/South Carolina border. The primary goal of the survey was to determine the National Register eligibility of sites within the survey areas. Sites were identified primarily through subsurface survey of high probability area. Sloping areas were examined through pedestrian survey. As a result of this work, 181 sites were identified or revisited. We also recorded 42 isolated finds. Of the 181 sites, we were unable to relocate seven previously recorded sites. Of the remaining 174 sites, eleven are recommended as potentially eligible, 1 requires further work, and the remaining 166 are recommended as not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places or were not found. Two sites contained Early Archaic components, 13 had Middle Archaic components, five contained Late Archaic components, two contained Early Woodland components,. two Middle Woodland components, four Woodland/ Mississippian components, and three Mississippian components. There were 78 undiagnostic lithic scatters. Of the 90 historic components, only one dated to the early 19 century, 21 could be dated to the late 19th to early 20th century, and 31 to the early to mid 20 th century. In addition, there were three historic cemeteries, four liquor stills, and 36 historic field clearing rock piles. Table 1 provides a summary of this information.
