Abstract

Under contract with Jordan, Jones & Goulding, Inc., Brockington and Associates, Inc. performed an intensive archaeological resources survey (Phase I) within the Georgia Transmission Corporation's proposed Spain Substation project tract. The project tract included approximately 3.6 hectares (9 acres) of a proposed electrical substation. Survey tasks were completed in compliance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and to comply with regulations implementing this legislation (36 CFR Part 800: Protection of Historic Properties). No previously recorded archaeological sites are known within the project tract, and no archaeological sites have been recorded within the general vicinity. During field investigation, 19 shovel tests were excavated within the project tract. All exposed ground surfaces and slopes were also inspected. Shovel tests typically revealed 0 to 20 cm (0 to 7.9 in) of brown loamy sand over yellow orange clay subsoil. No archaeological sites were identified. However, one isolated find (3 historic artifacts) was discovered in the survey area. As a result of background research and field inspection, no significant archaeological resources will be affected by the proposed Spain Substation. Cultural resources clearance is recommended.
