Abstract

New South Associates, Inc. intensively surveyed the approximately 110-acre Wayne K. Miller property, Jackson County, between April 23 and 27, 2001 and the approximately 253-acre Moorman property, Tift County, between May 1 and 11, 2001. Approximately 450 shovel test pits were excavated during the survey of the Miller Tract. Of these, five were positive, while additional artifacts were located on the surface at six proveniences. Altogether, two prehistoric sites and three isolated prehistoric finds (all possibly dating to the Middle Archaic) were located on the Miller Tract. None of these are recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and no further work is necessary. A total of 1,026 shovel tests were excavated at the Moorman Tract. Artifacts were recovered from 64 of these. Five prehistoric sites (all possibly dating to the Late Archaic) and one predominantly historic site were located. Additionally, five prehistoric and eight historic isolated finds were located at the Moorman Tract. In terms of research potential, only one site (i.e., the prehistoric Site 9Ti31) was recommended as potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Test unit excavations at 9Ti31 on 11 and 12 June, 2001 showed that the site has been disturbed and exhibited no further research potential. None of the sites on the Moorman Tract are accordingly recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. It is also recommended that no further archaeological work be done at the Miller and Moorman tracts.
