Abstract

Phase II archaeological testing of 9Po81 on CR 182/Bethlehem Road, north of Fish Creek, in Polk County, Georgia, was conducted by New South Associates, Inc. from August 6 to August 10, 2001. The site, measuring approximately 60 meters south to north by 130 meters west to east, is centered on a natural spring that emanates from limestone bedrock approximately 20 meters west of CR 182/Bethelehem Road. Three prehistoric components and one historic period component were identified at 9Po81. The site was probably used as a camp during the Early Archaic, Late Archaic, and Early Woodland periods. In the early twentieth century the site was cultivated for cotton and since at least the 1960s the existing houses were built on portions of the site. Due to the limited research potential of the disturbed deposits and artifacts at 9Po81, the site is recommended as not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
