Abstract

A Phase I Archaeological Survey was conducted by New South Associates in April and May, 2001 of areas planned for use in the Macon-Atlanta Corridor. These areas included proposed station locations (both train and bus), additional track locations (storage tracks, passing sidings, and additional main tracks), and layover sites. The study areas are located in seven counties including Bibb, Monroe, Lamar, Spalding, Henry, Clayton, and Fulton. A total of 26.6 miles of additional track and 115.64 acres of station locations were surveyed. The survey located three sites each in Monroe and Clayton Counties and one site each Lamar and Spalding Counties. These sites are considered not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. A total of four isolated finds was found in Monroe County, two in Lamar, and one in Clayton. These isolates are considered not eligible for inclusion in the National Register and no further study is recommended. Although no further study of the sites or isolates is recommended, further study at the proposed Griffin Rail Station in downtown Griffin is recommended. The station covers an existing parking lot which may not have been subject to excessive cutting and filling before paving suggesting that undisturbed archaeological deposits may exist in the lot. Archival research and limited backhoe trenching are recommended to provide information concerning archaeological deposits in the area.
