Abstract

In October 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological resources survey at the proposed bridge replacement in Dooly County, Georgia. This investigation was carried out under contract with The LPA Group, Inc. for the Georgia Department of Transportation. The project was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and 36 CFR Part 800, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The project goals were to identify and evaluate all archaeological resources within the boundaries of potential impact at the proposed bridge replacement. The bridge proposed for replacement is located in southwestern Georgia near the town of Vienna, on SR 27 over Pennahatchee Creek, Dooly County. Figure 1 shows the location of the bridge scheduled for replacement as well as all identified archaeological sites. The project areas include clear-cut areas, low and wet areas, planted pines, hardwood forests, and grassy fields with briers and privet as undergrowth. During background research, five previously recorded archaeological resources were identified within a ½ mile radius of the proposed bridge replacement. Background research was conducted through the Georgia Site Files Database, maintained by the University of Georgia, Athens. None of these sites is located within a boundary of the bridge replacement; therefore, none will be impacted by the proposed bridge replacements. Two archaeological sites, 9DY27 and 9DY28, and one Isolated Find (#2) were recorded during our field investigation. Both sites are classified as lithic scatters and are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The proposed bridge replacement will not affect any significant archaeological resources. No additional investigations are recommended.
