Abstract

The Archaeological Services Unit responded to a request for archaeological evaluation of property overlooking Davis Crossroads in Walker County (Figure 1). The location has been proposed as the site of an interpretive overlook that will provide information about the Civil War battle that took place there. It was known from a previous visit to the area that the proposed location was the site of a historic farmhouse, and that an associated barn stood on the property.

The project will consist of addition of gravel on the east side of the small knoll overlooking the crossroads. The east side of the knoll is mostly an outcrop of fossil-bearing limestone. There will be some sort of barrier between the parking area and interpretive overlook to prevent cars from encroaching. The interpretive area will be on the west side of the knoll, which will provide a clear view of the valley after a dense stand of small cedars is mowed. The interpretive display will consist of three small (ca. 2' x 3') vandal-resistant plaques, each of the plaques will be mounted on two 4" x 4" black metal posts. The only ground disturbance anticipated will be digging or drilling to place the posts.
