Abstract

In July 2001, the area of potential effect for the proposed replacement of the S.R. 128/137 bridge over the Flint River was archeologically surveyed. Archival research had indicated that this general area had rich potential for archeological sites. In particular, the farmstead/plantation of early nineteenth century Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins and the Creek Indian Agency he headed was located on the east side of the river just south of the bridge, and contemporaneous Fort Lawrence was located directly across on the west side. Hawkins' grave and home have been recorded as archeological sites (outside the project area), but the Fort has not been located. Our intensive survey, which used surface inspection and the excavation of numerous shovel tests, failed to encounter any evidence of the fort or substantial occupation dating to the time of the Creek Agency (1803 to 1820s). We recorded four archeological sites, two prehistoric lithic scatters, one twentieth century house site and one twentieth century artifact scatter, and recommend that all four are not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. In regard to archeological resources, we recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
