Abstract

A Phase I Archaeological Survey was conducted by New South Associates in August and September, 2001 of areas planned for use in the Athens-Atlanta Rail Corridor. These areas included proposed station locations and additional track locations. The study areas are located in six counties including Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Oconee, and Clarke. A total of 54.07 miles of additional track and 134.1 acres of station locations were surveyed. The survey identified one newly discovered site in Fulton County, 9Fu410, one in DeKalb County, 9Da366, and two in Gwinnett, 9Gw515 and 9Gw516. In addition, two previously recorded sites were revisited in DeKalb County, 9Da354 and 9Da355. Of these sites, only 9Da355, the Decatur Waterworks Site is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The site lies outside the right-of-way, and should not be impacted by rail construction. Two isolated finds were found, one in Gwinnett County and one in Fulton County. These isolates are considered not eligible for inclusion in the National Register and no further study is recommended.
