Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the proposed improvements to Houston Avenue between Pio Nono Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, City of Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. Archaeological survey of the approximately 3.5 mile corridor was conducted between October 11 and 15,2001. No previously recorded archaeological sites were recorded within the confines of the project corridor, although the portion of the corridor north of Eisenhower Parkway is included in the boundaries of the Tindall Heights Historic District. The survey did locate five previously undiscovered sites, all historic house sites. The sites, 9Bi139, 9Bi140, 9Bi141, 9Bi142, and 9Bi143, have all been impacted by demolition and clearing activities. No subsurface remains were recorded at any of the sites. The sites are considered not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and no further archaeological study of the sites or of the corridor is recommended.
