Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a portion of LaGrange Bypass in Troup County, Georgia. The bypass stretches from SR 219 (Whitesville Road) in the east traveling west then north before it terminates, originally at the intersection of US 29/SR 14 with Fling Road, and currently at SR 109. The eastern portion of the corridor, approximately 3 miles in length, was surveyed by New South Associates in a GDOT study for the original route proposal for the loop. The new route veers north of the earlier studied corridor at the approximate 3-mile mark, eventually ending at SR 109 east of its intersection with Fling Road. This section 3.4 miles and has a right-of-way of 200 feet. The archaeological survey of background research, field survey, laboratory analysis of artifacts recovered during fieldwork, and the preparation of this report. The report includes the project methodology, background, results, and recommendations concerning the archaeological resources located within the project corridor. One archaeological site was identified during the survey, an unidentified prehistoric lithic scatter that is recommended not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
