Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an extensive Phase I archaeological resources survey for the proposed Bridge Replacement on State Route 166 (SR 166) over the Dog River Reservoir in Douglas County, Georgia, under contract with Register and Associates, Inc. The project corridor, located north of the existing SR 166, begins approximately 976 meters (3,200 ft) west of the Dog River (now Dog River Reservoir) and continues in an easterly direction running generally parallel to the existing SR 166 to approximately 579.5 meters (1,900 ft) east of the Dog River (Figure 1). The project corridor width is approximately 30 meters (100 ft). Background research and field survey were conducted to provide accurate and reliable location of archaeological sites in the project area, provide an evaluation of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for all identified archaeological resources, and provide recommendations for mitigation if avoidance is not possible. This survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act (1992, as amended). The archaeological field survey consisted of pedestrian inspection of the entire project area. Visual surface inspection and shovel testing were conducted within the project boundaries. Shovel tests were dug in 30 meter (100 ft) intervals within a single transect traversing the length of the corridor. Two isolated finds were recovered (Isolates I and 2) (Figure I). Isolate I consisted of one tertiary, Coastal Plain chert flake. Isolate 2 consisted of one quartz, Coosa projectile point. Neither isolate meets National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility criteria and both are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Brockington and Associates, Inc., found no significant archaeological resources within the area of potential effect (APE) of the project corridor. Archaeological clearance for the proposed Bridge Replacement on SR 166 over the Dog River Reservoir is recommended.
