Abstract

On December 7, 2001 and March 4, 2002 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted a Phase I archeological survey of a proposed State Route (SR) 16 safety improvement in Eatonton, Georgia. The improvement will entail construction of a two-way left turn lane, two stop- and-go traffic signals, curb, gutter and sidewalk from Jefferson Street (west) to the Rooty Creek Bridge (east), meeting the western edge of Rooty Creek Bridge replacement project BRST -069- 1 (20). Total1ength of the improvement project is approximately 1.13 km (0.7 mi). The archeological project area, or area of potential effect, includes all area ranging from 9 to 20m (30 to 66 ft) beyond the respective edges of existing SR 16 pavement for the entire project length. The goal of the survey was to locate, describe and evaluate archeological resources within the area of potential effect in conformity with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Archival research indicated that no known sites or historic period structures lie within the project area, but one prehistoric archeological site 9PM1171 was recorded near Rooty Creek Bridge. 9PM1171 is a low density, prehistoric lithic scatter that has been adversely impacted by the existing road and right-of-way and is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed construction of the SR 16 safety improvements in Eatonton, Georgia will not adversely affect any significant archeological resources.
