Abstract

On January 4, 2002 an archeological survey was conducted within the area of potential effect for a proposed reconstruction of the existing intersection of SR 5/Bill Arp Road and SR 166 in southern Douglas County. The project consists of reconfiguring the intersection to include a 40-m (130-ft) diameter roundabout, requiring approximately 876 m2 (9080 ft2) of new right-of-way. The area of potential effect includes both the existing right-of-way and additional right-of-way surrounding the existing intersection. The survey confirmed that most of the additional right-of-way for the proposed improvements consisted of developed or heavily disturbed land, not conducive for containing cultural resources. One shovel test was excavated within the proposed right-of-way. Much of the existing right-of-way consisted of cut-and-fill and/or exposed ground, requiring only a pedestrian survey inspection. Four shovel tests also were excavated within existing right-of-way. None of the shovel tests excavated within the area of potential effect produced cultural material and no evidence exists of historic or prehistoric cultural resources within the project area. No archeological sites exist within the proposed project's boundaries. Therefore, construction will not adversely affect any significant cultural resources.
