Southern Research conducted archaeological survey and testing of40 acres surrounding the tabby ruins of the Horton House in March and April 2002. This investigation was conducted as part of a Structural and Site Preservation Plan for the Horton House. The archaeological investigations were funded by portions of a National Park Service Save America's Treasures grant awarded to the Jekyll Island-State Park Authority (JIA). This archaeology was one component of a preservation study and plan spearheaded in 2000 by the JIA and The Friends of Historic Jekyll Island, with assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division. The JIA used the initial preservation study to initiate a long-term management plan for the Horton House, and received a Save America's Treasures grant in April 2001. The property is currently a National Register site and has potential for National Landmark status.
