Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, DNR archaeologists conducted an intensive archaeological survey of a proposed Transportation Enhancement Activity project on Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island is a state-owned barrier island located about six miles off the Georgia coast in Glynn County. The Jekyll Island Authority administers the island for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The project, funded by the Federal Highway Administration through the Georgia Department of Transportation's Transportation Enhancements projects, proposes to construct a trail along the southwestern edge of the island. The survey was conducted on July 24, 2002, and recorded two new sites. Both are nondiagnostic shell scatters, and neither will be impacted by the proposed project.
