Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation wishes to replace two bridges on State Route 171 in Glascock County, Georgia, on the northern perimeter of Gibson. The larger of the two bridges spans Rocky Comfort Creek and the other bridge crosses a small tributary (or overflow channel) of Rocky Comfort Creek. The area of potential effect for the proposed bridge replacements includes both existing and newly required rights-of-way. Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., contracted with the Georgia Department of Transportation through the firm of Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jernigan, Inc., conducted an archeological survey of the proposed project's APE on July 19th, 2002. The archeological survey recorded a single prehistoric site, 9GL8. This site consists of only a few lithic artifacts in a heavily disturbed context and is recommended ineligible for listing on the National of Historic Places. Background research conducted prior to the archeological survey found no existing archeological sites recorded within or close to the area of potential effect. Therefore, the proposed bridge replacements will have no adverse effect on significant archeological resources.
