Abstract

The survey reported here was designed to locate archeological sites in the areas of potential effect of a Sumter County bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). An attempt to evaluate located resources' eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) was also made, to the limited extent possible from a few shovel tests within the project's narrow corridor. The survey located three prehistoric archeological sites in the project area. The portions of the three sites within the project's area of potential effect were sampled extensively. Based on these samples, the site segments under scrutiny were deemed insignificant for archeological research. Therefore Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. recommends that the proposed bridge replacement project will have no adverse effect upon significant archeological resources.
