Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a Henry County bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Two archeological sites were found, one prehistoric lithic scatter (9HY325) entirely within the corridor of proposed project and one twentieth century artifact scatter (9HY324) almost entirely within the proposed corridor. The latter scatter also contained two prehistoric flakes. Site 9HY325 is heavily eroded and disturbed and is recommended as not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. While the entire boundary of Site 9HY324 was not firmly determined because the site lies at the edge of the project area, based on topography and the shovel testing within the project corridor, we believe the vast majority of the site lies within the project area and was investigated by our survey. This portion is recommended as not contributing to the eligibility of the site, as it is badly disturbed, mainly by the construction of a new house on the old house site. However, since the entire site was not investigated, the eligibility of the site as a whole remains unknown. As a result of these conclusions, we recommend that no significant archeological resources exist within the proposed project corridor. Regarding such resources, we suggest the project be allowed to proceed as planned within the surveyed corridor.
