Abstract

The Environmental and Safety Division of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia, required a phase I cultural resources investigation of a parcel totaling approximately 4.4 acres. The US Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, conducted the intensive cultural resources survey. The goal of the survey was to locate, record and evaluate cultural resources within the project area in order to comply with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment), the Archeological and Historical Preservation Act of 1974, as amended (PL-93-291), The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (PL-90-190), American Indians Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Cultural resources were evaluated according to the criteria listed in National Register Bulletin 15, How to Apply the National Register Criteria for Evaluation. Fieldwork was conducted in August 2002 requiring 6 person-days with a crew of 1 archaeologist. During the course of the survey, 1 archaeological site was identified and assigned a site number. Several modern dump areas were recorded. None of these were assigned official state site numbers due to the recent age (< 50 years). No additional archaeological investigation or protection is recommended for the site recorded during the course of this effort. The site is recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Evaluation criteria used for determining eligibility included preservation state, potential for subsurface features, overall artifact density, and artifact depth.
