Abstract

An archaeological survey of proposed improvements located along McGinnis Ferry Road at the intersections of Windward Concourse and Union Hill 'Road was conducted by New South Associates on October 24, 2001. The road lies along the border of Fulton and Forsyth Counties, Georgia. At the three-way intersection of McGinnis Ferry Road and Union Hill Road, the existing right-of-way is being expanded from 60 feet to 80 feet along McGinnis Ferry Road and from 75 feet to 90 feet along Union Hill Road. The right-of-way at the McGinnis Ferry Road and Windward Concourse intersection will remain at the existing 140 feet for McGinnis Ferry and 120 feet for Windward Concourse. The total length of each of the projects is 0.2 miles. No archaeological remains were identified during the survey. Since no archaeological sites were located during this survey, no further archaeological work is recommended. An existing cemetery was noted at the Union Hill/McGinnis Ferry Road intersection. The cemetery is still maintained and is connected to the neighboring Union Hill Church, which also appears active. While currently maintained, the cemetery appears to have a long history. The project as currently proposed does not appear to directly impact the cemetery. However, should the project area change and the cemetery be threatened, additional evaluation would be needed to determine whether it is eligible for the National Register.
