Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of potential effect for a Walton County bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Archival research showed no known sites in the immediate area, but that there was a likelihood of two small complexes of historic period structures being within or close to the project area. The survey, conducted in September of 2002, relied on visual inspection and the excavation of about 60 shovel tests. Two archeological sites were encountered, both associated with the documented historic period structure complexes. Site 9WN121 is now an abandoned standing house outside of the project area that has an associated artifact scatter that extends into the project area. We recommend that the portion of the site within the area of potential effect does not contribute to the site's eligibility to the National Register. Site 9WN122 is a late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century farmstead that has been badly disturbed by razing and the construction of the present highway in 1955. Because it fails to meet any of the criteria, we recommend that this site is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. We conclude that the proposed bridge replacement project will cause no adverse effects to significant archeological resources.
