Abstract

The survey reported here was designed to locate archeological sites in the areas of potential effect of two Randolph County bridge replacement projects proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation, State Route 50 over Pachitla Creek and State Route 216 over Carter Creek. An attempt to evaluate located resources' eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) was also made, to the limited extent possible from a few shovel tests within the projects' narrow corridors. The survey located two prehistoric archeological sites and one isolated artifact occurrence in the Carter Creek project area. The portions of the sites (9RH66 and 9RH67) within the project's area of potential effect are deemed insignificant for archeological research and thus do not contribute to NRHP eligibility. Since much of both sites lies outside of the area of potential effect and thus was not investigated, the eligibility of the sites on the whole remains unknown. No sites were found in the Pachitla Creek project area. Therefore Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. recommends that neither of the two proposed bridge replacement projects will have any adverse effect upon significant archeological resources.
