Abstract

In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended, and the Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) of 1979, staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted an archaeological survey for proposed passing lanes on SR 83 in Jasper County, Georgia. The proposed project would construct a series of passing lanes between the Ocmulgee River and the towns of Monticello and Shady Dale. Four archaeological sites were located and identified during the course of this project, three of which are located within the area of potential effect (APE). Of those three, site 9JA53 is recommended not eligible, and the portions of site 9JA55 and 9JA394 present within the APE do not contribute to either site's overall eligibility status. Therefore, we conclude that no significant archaeological resources will be affected by implementation of the proposed project. No further archaeological work is recommended.
