Abstract

During January 2003, TRC completed a Phase I cultural resource survey of a proposed 12,200foot long sewer line in Monroe, Walton County, Georgia. The line will be constructed between a point on the south side of Double Springs Road east of Mountain Creek, then south along Mountain Creek, and south along a portion of the east side of Mountain View Road, to a point near the intersection of Mountain View Road and West Spring Street (Rt. 10). The work was undertaken for Wiedeman & Singleton. The survey included both archaeological and historic structures surveys. The project corridor is 50 feet wide and generally follows the flood plain of Mountain Creek and portions of two existing roads. The archaeological survey, conducted January 27 and 28, 2003, involved documentation of all archaeological sites and cultural features within the project corridor. A review of the state site files showed that no previously identified sites had been recorded in the project corridor. No new archaeological sites or isolated finds were identified during fieldwork. The historic structure survey was conducted at the same time as the archaeological survey, and sought to identify all structures 50 years old or older within the project's Area of Potential Effects (APE). Due to the buried nature of the project, the APE was defined as the proposed right-of-way corridor and any area that might be within view of any major clearing of vegetation necessary for construction of the project. TRC identified no historic structures within this APE.
