Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace the bridge over Cane Creek on State Route (SR) 85 in Meriwether County, Georgia. The area of potential effect (APE) for the proposed bridge replacement project includes both existing and newly required rights-of-way. Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., contracted by the GDOT through the firm of Edwards Pitman Environmental, Inc., conducted an archeological survey of the proposed project's APE on July 14`h and 15`h, 2002. The archeological survey found a single prehistoric artifact, identified as Occurrence 1. This isolated artifact is recommended as not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Background research conducted prior to the archeological survey found no existing archeological sites recorded within or close to the APE. Therefore, the proposed bridge replacement project will have no adverse effect on significant (eligible to the National Register) archeological resources.
