Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation along the border between Marion and Talbot Counties, Georgia. Archival and field research resulted in the discovery of two archeological sites with portions within the project area as originally defined, sites 9TA123 and 9MR14. Site 9TA123 represents a historic era farmstead and is recommended as ineligible for the NRHP, due to its poor preservation and lack of research potential. Conversely, site 9MR1 4-the remains of a historic era mill and dam-is recommended as eligible to the NRHP due to its good preservation, the fact that it includes a recognized type of dam structure, and because of the site's potential to produce important information on early water-power industry in Georgia. Due to revisions in the proposed project area prompted by the discovery and partial delineation of site 9MR14, both of these sites are now beyond the project's area of potential effect. As a result, the project is expected to have no effect upon significant archeological resources. Notwithstanding other considerations, we recommend the project be allowed to proceed as planned.
