Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace two bridges in Candler County, Georgia (Figure 1). One of the bridges is the crossing of State Route 46 (SR 46) over Fifteen mile Creek and the other is the crossing of State Route 129 (SR 129) over the Canoochee River. Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey of the areas of potential effect (APE) for these bridge replacement projects to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. It stipulates that federal agencies, in this case the Federal Highway Administration, take into account potential adverse effects of an undertaking to significant cultural resources. The goals of these surveys was to locate, delineate, describe, and evaluate-in terms of eligibility to the National Register-archeological sites in the projects' APE.
