Abstract

On 20 August 2002, Brockington and Associates, Inc., performed intensive archaeological resources survey (Phase I) within the approximately 656 meter (2,150 ft) project corridor for the proposed bridge replacement over Coldwater Creek along State Route (SR) 172 in Hart County, Georgia. The survey was conducted under contract with Greenhorne & O'Mara, Inc., in advance of the proposed bridge replacement. Survey tasks were completed in compliance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended), by personnel qualified under the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36CFR Part 61). Background research determined there are no recorded archaeological sites within the project corridor or within a 1.6 km (1 mi) radius. The Phase I archaeological survey consisted of excavation of screened shovel tests at 30 meter (100 ft) intervals across the entire project area. Additionally, all exposed ground surfaces and slopes were visually inspected. No archaeological sites were identified during the field survey. Cultural resources clearance is recommended.
