Abstract

The objective of this project was to conduct an archaeological survey of the areas to be impacted by construction of the proposed Utoy Creek Outfall Corridor in Atlanta, Georgia, under the provisions of a contract prepared on April 22, 1977. The background research and archaeological survey was conducted by the undersigned. Field work was initiated on April 25, 1977 and completed seven days later.

The project contract required that a literature and record search be conducted in order to determine the nature and extent of known historical and archaeological resources in the project vicinity. This background research was conducted at the Atlanta Historical Society, the Atlanta Public Library, Georgia State University Library, and the Cobb-Fulton County Archaeological Survey. The results of this research will be reported in detail in Chapters II and III.

The archaeological survey involved the relocation and delineation of three sites known to exist within the impact area, as well as surface reconnaissance and subsurface testing along the impact area to ascertain the presence of other sites. The proposed outfall line has been divided into six segments to facilitate the description of the survey, and includes the West Portal Area and Cascade-Willis Shaft Site. The findings for each area will be described in detail in Chapter IV.
