Abstract

An archaeological survey of the proposed Watkinsville, Georgia Wastewater Treatment Facility discovered four archaeological sites. Two sites 9Oc21 and 9Oc 22 are the remains of Durham's Mill and Gin and the miller's dwelling (ca.1870). This water powered facility served Watkinsville as a merchant mill immediately after the Civil War. Two prehistoric sites were also discovered. 9Oc20 and 9Oc23 represent prehistoric lithic workshops. 9Oc23 is a quarry site where high quality quartz was obtained for making chipped stone tools. 9Oc20 is a lithic workshop near the quarry. All of the sites are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance. 9Oc20 and 9Oc21 will be impacted by the construction of the wastewater treatment plant. Limited testing at both sites is recommended.
